Gettin The Read On Reed

Coach Bill Belichick has always let it be known about his respect and admiration for Ravens safety Ed Reed. One only needs to watch the coach's portrayal in "A Football Life" on the NFL Network to see how badly he would love to have Reed on his team.

Will it happen once Reed becomes a free agent after the Super Bowl? He stated that he wants to keep playing. It appears that the Ravens might be ready to move on because he won't come cheaply. He is also 34 and banged up after 11 seasons in the NFL.

He is one of the greatest safeties ever to play. How much does he have left in the tank? Most experts say that it would cost about $16 million for two years. It seems a lot for a guy that age. We have seen similar busts with Chad Johnson and Albert Haynesworth. Johnson was always a favorite of Belichick, but he might have joined the team too late in his career.

I don't think Belichick has a problem jumping on the chance to sign Reed. I think it's an issue of whether he can still play to his future Hall of Fame level.

Watch for the Pats to make a run for Reed. It might be their last chance to do so. He would certainly bring the pass defense up a few notches.
