Never To Return

Dan Marino is in the news, but for the wrong reason. He admitted to fathering a child back in 2005 while married with six children. This is a personal affair for him and should not be part of the Super Bowl coverage, but the media vultures like to circle overhead.

If they want to talk about Marino, they should focus on his career. He was part of the illustrious QB class of 1983. He lead the Miami Dolphins to the Super Bowl in his second season. The sky was the limit for him back then.

Unfortunately, he played another 15 seasons and never made it back to the big game. He was elected to the Hall of Fame, but never hoisted the Lombardi Trophy. He wasn't the first player not to do so and won't be the last.

Some of the greatest players never get a chance to play for the losing team. Just look at Tony Gonzalez.

Who Is The Greatest?

Randy Moss never said much to the media when he played for the Pats. He also kept a low profile while playing for the 49er's this season. Now that he is in his second Super Bowl at the age of 35, he decided to talk at Media Day for over one hour.

During that time, he proclaimed himself to be the greatest receiver of all-time. He recognized the three Super Bowls won by Jerry Rice and all of his career records, but Moss said that his style of play had a profound impact in the way teams play pass defense. He might have a point, but I often find discussions like this difficult to come to agree upon.

Rice has all of the records that matter, including career receptions, yards and TD's. The numbers put up by Moss reflect a Hall of Fame career. I think Moss will always be considered of the greatest. I don't know how anyone can be judged as the greatest, but Rice certainly makes an argument for himself.

Gettin The Read On Reed

Coach Bill Belichick has always let it be known about his respect and admiration for Ravens safety Ed Reed. One only needs to watch the coach's portrayal in "A Football Life" on the NFL Network to see how badly he would love to have Reed on his team.

Will it happen once Reed becomes a free agent after the Super Bowl? He stated that he wants to keep playing. It appears that the Ravens might be ready to move on because he won't come cheaply. He is also 34 and banged up after 11 seasons in the NFL.

He is one of the greatest safeties ever to play. How much does he have left in the tank? Most experts say that it would cost about $16 million for two years. It seems a lot for a guy that age. We have seen similar busts with Chad Johnson and Albert Haynesworth. Johnson was always a favorite of Belichick, but he might have joined the team too late in his career.

I don't think Belichick has a problem jumping on the chance to sign Reed. I think it's an issue of whether he can still play to his future Hall of Fame level.

Watch for the Pats to make a run for Reed. It might be their last chance to do so. He would certainly bring the pass defense up a few notches.

The Soft Game

The NFL put the Pro Bowl to bed for another year after a 62-35 win by the NFC over the AFC. It was a strange game to watch with revised rules to protect the players. The stands were less than half full, although the game was sold out.

Commissioner Roger Goodell was adamant on the game being competitive. I think it was at times, but it's hard to have an all-star football game without a lot of mistakes being made.

There were some very interesting plays. My favorite was having Houston's JJ Watt line up as a receiver on a third and goal from the 6 yard line. Peyton Manning threw an incomplete pass to him. Watt made a formidable goal line receiver at 6"5 and 295.

It was strange to see NFC center Jeff Saturday snap the ball on one play to the AFC's Peyton Manning. Saturday plans to retire. It was one last snap for him and Manning who played 11 seasons together with Indianapolis.

In retrospect, it was more of an exhibition game than a regular season contest. I think there will be the usual discussion about the game, but I bet they play it again next year. It's always about the money.

Low Socks

The NFL is always concerned about its image in the eyes of the public. They routinely issue fines for excessive hits. Marcus Pollard of the Ravens was fines $15,250 for a helmet to helmet hit on Wes Welker in the AFC Championship game. I wonder how they came up with that odd amount.

All of the money goes to NFL Charities. The players get a tax deduction and the league gives the appearance of containing some of the excessive violence.

They are also concerned about the uniforms of players and the protection of logos and trademarks. Players are fined for wearing apparel not from NIKE.

I think they were a bit excessive when they fined San Francisco 49er's RB Frank Gore $10,000 because he wore his socks too low in the NFC Championship game.

Every NFL game has representatives form the league office on the sidelines to ensure that all players conform with the proper uniform guidelines. The guy that caught Gore didn't miss anything.

No Island here

The New York Jets have a mess of their hands with CB Darrelle Reavis. They let it be known that he is available for a trade. The Pats have expressed interest, but the Jets will never send him to Foxborough. He has one year left on his contract and will be returning from a season-ending ACL injury.

Before he was hurt, he was seeking the type of contract that the Buffalo Bills gave to Mario Williams, six years for $96 million. The Jets have no desire to cripple themselves with that type of salary cap impact. Any team that gets him will only have his services for one year unless they sign him to a long term extension. How many teams are willing to give such a big contract to a  player coming back from ACL surgery?

When Reavis went down with his injury, not only did the Jets season collapse, but it certainly cost Reavis untold millions. It would be great to see Reavis with the Pats, but it will never happen.

The Days of Izdik

While fans of the Pats lament their loss in the AFC Championship game, things could be so much worse. The team has come so far from their losing years of ownership under Victor Kiam and James Orthwein. You know things are going good when your biggest problem is losing the AFC title game.

I often feel bad for Jet fans. I love the team and have always followed them. Their new GM John Izdik has the challenge of his career ahead of him. He must co-exist with Coach Rex Ryan while trying to please owner Woody Johnson. Fans are outraged about missing the playoffs. Many fans were not even alive when the Jets played in Super Bowl III 44 years ago.

Like every team, there are decisions that must be made on players. What do you do about Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow? What about Darelle Reavis who has one year left on his contract? If Ryan has a losing season, will he get fired?

The New York media keeps it cooking year round. The fans are restless. They need to make the right decisions in the draft and free agency.

Having your future tied to Rex Ryan can be a challenge for anyone. The drama will continue in the Big Apple. I have my doubts about the Jets having a winning season in 2013.

A Strange Super Bowl Story

The allegation by former Oakland Raider WR Tim Brown about coach Bill Callahan deliberately losing Super Bowl XXXVII seems pretty outrageous. Brown claims that the former head coach hated his employer so much that he changed the offensive game plan two days before the contest in order to lose it to his friend John Gruden, the coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Raiders lost the game 48-21.

Prior to the 2002 season, Gruden had been head coach of the Raiders from 1998-2001. Callahan, a member of Gruden's staff, replaced his friend after he was fired by owner Al Davis. It seems that Callahan became a reluctant head coach and played on the biggest stage against his will. Why would he try to lose the biggest game of his career? The whole scenario seems preposterous.

Now, we have Hall of Fame receiver and teammate Jerry Rice supporting the claim by Brown. Why would Rice put his name on this allegation? Is there any substance to this? Have these guys suffered from too many head injuries?

Time will tell how this plays out. If the story stays alive in the news, it will gain more attention. Will it fall by the wayside as just another bizarre story?

You never know how these things work out. It seems so strange that it's hard to believe. Anyone can make an allegation, but when another person comes forward, you need to pay attention.

A Final Chance

Bruce Arians finally got his first head coaching job in the NFL when he was selected by the Arizona Cardinals after a career that started the same year as Bill Belichick in 1975. Arians has been a position coach and offensive coordinator at 15 different tops throughout this career, starting as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech in 1975. He even served under Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant as running backs coach from 1981-1982. He had a six year tenure at Temple as head coach from 1983-1988.

During the 2012 season, he served as interim head coach of the Indianapolis Colts during the absence of Chuck Pagano, He helped steer them into the playoffs under rookie QB Andrew Luck.

Arians is very typical of NFL coaches who move from place to place to pursue their dream. Many pass between college and the NFL. The only thing certain is that they will eventually lose their job.

Arians knows this might be his only chance as a head coach in the NFL. If it doesn't work, he will become another name on a list on some future Black Monday. He will end up on another team as a coordinator or position coach.

The Controversial Game

When you look at the current Pro Bowl roster for the game on Sunday, it's easy to see why they should not play this game. The players deserve the honor and recognition, but nobody really wants to play the game.

The rosters have already been weakened by the loss of those playing in the Super Bowl. There are replacements for them, but eventually, the talent level gets diluted. The game suffers because the best players are no longer playing.

It's easy to see why they play it because it's all about the money. The game draws 13 million viewers, better than the all-star games of the NBA, NHL and MLB. It has a big impact on the local Hawaiian economy with the numerous parties and charity events. It has become the opening event of the year for the tourism industry.

I can't blame Wes Welker for opting out based on injury. I have no doubt that he is banged up very badly. When his pending free agency, he stands to gain nothing by playing and has everything to lose if he gets hurt.

The Commissioner raised concern about the quality of the play in last year's game. It will be interesting to see how well the game is played. There will be grousing before and after the game, but as long as nobody suffers a catastrophic injury, the show will go on.

Nobody Is The Best

The tandem of Coach Bill Belichick and QB Tom Brady are considered one of the greatest of all-time. Are they the greatest? How do you judge that? They hold so many records that really matter. They are 5-2 in AFC Championship games and 3-2 in the Super Bowl.

When it's all over for Belichick and Brady, they will have left a big imprint on the NFL. How much longer will it last for them? Can they make it back next year?

There is talk about whether this effects their legacy. I will never say  they were the greatest because nobody is. It's hard to compare players from different eras. They are certainly the best of this time in my life.

The Special Games Today

It's less than four hours until the kickoff of the AFC Championship game between the Pats and Ravens. This has been my 47th season following the team, starting in 1966 when I was 12.

Fans have experienced an incredible ride over the last 12 seasons with Coach Belichick and Tom Brady leading the team to 7 AFC Championship games. Fans have been spoiled in that time with five Super Bowl games and hopefully another one after today.

It wasn't always like this. As a fan, I went my first 11 seasons before the team had a playoff game in 1976. It was the infamous Divisional loss against the Oakland Raiders.

It took 20 seasons before I watched my team in a AFC title game in 1985. That was also the year of the Super Bowl loss to the Chicago Bears. I would need to wait 10 seasons for another AFC game and Super Bowl. Ultimately, it would be two AFC games in my first 35 seasons.

Since then, the rest is history. I have a great appreciation for the game today after such a long drought earlier.

I only need to look at Atlanta and see Tony Gonzalez playing in his first NFC Championship game after 16 seasons. You never know if your team will make it back there.

Te'o Dropping

It remains to be seen whether the bizarre story of Notre Dame LB Manti Te'o will effect his standing in the upcoming NFL draft. Prior to his fake girlfriend story, he was seen as a top 20 pick in the first round.

Te'o continues to make conflicting statements about who knew what and when. Draft "experts" have already said his stock is dropping. If that's the case, his little caper will cost him a ton of money. He will leave money on the table for every spot he slips.

He had a poor game in the BCS Championship loss to Alabama. One game doesn't make a career, but he could have helped himself with a strong effort. Now, he is a media sensation for all the wrong reasons.

It might be unfair, but players with arrest records don't always get impacted in the draft as Te'o might. There was talk about him coming out early last year. In retrospect, it would have been a good idea because this will cost him money no matter what.

The Dubious Club

It's too far away to even think about a Super Bowl match-up with San Francisco or Atlanta. I think the Pats will have their hands full with the Ravens on Sunday. The game last year could have been easily lost in the final moments.

If the Past get to the Super Bowl and lose, they will have the dubious distinction of being in a select group of teams with four Super Bowl losses. They will join the Bills, Vikings, and Broncos in this unique group.

The Pats have a 3-3 record in the Super Bowl. As a fan, I would rather lose the game than not get there. It's a horrible feeling when your team loses, but at least they were on the biggest stage.

That Stupid Billboard

I'm bored with hearing some of the stupid things that Pats fans say on television regarding the AFC Championship game against the Ravens. I realize that it's all fun, but some people have no clue about the game.

I find it outrageous that some company put up a billboard with a countdown clock for the end of the career of Ray Lewis. They assume the Ravens will lose, so Ray's career is expected to end on Sunday night about 10 pm.

These fans are boring and probably know nothing about the great accomplishments in his career. You could try and tell them, but they would say something stupid that shows their lack of knowledge about the great players of the game.

Can't Win Them All

The careers of Tom Brady and Payton Manning will always be compared. Brady comes out on top with three Super Bowls wins to Manning's one when you judge by championships.

The loss by the Denver Broncos to the Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional playoffs was just one more negative mark on Manning's career. It looks worse when you consider he has a record of 0-4 when the temperature is below 40 degrees.

In spite of his outstanding regular season accomplishments, he has never matched Brady in the playoffs.  Manning has a 9-11 record in the post-season. He has twelve trips to the playoffs, but never made it past the first round in eight of them. He made it to the AFC Championship Game three times with a chance to advance to the Super Bowl, but has a 1-2 record. He was only able to hoist the Lombardi Trophy once.

It's not a knock on his career. The quarterback gets a lot of the credit when his team wins, but also gets the blame. LB Ray Lewis is the face of his franchise, a rarity for a defensive player. In his illustrious career, he has only been played in one Super Bowl which the  Ravens won in 2000. He never made it back. It's now or never for him.

One More For Tony

There are many subplots in any NFL game. The players have some very interesting stories. We are seeing that with Atlanta Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez as he prepares for the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49er's on Sunday.

Gonzalez said this might be the last year of a remarkable career of 16 seasons. He was drafted in the first round by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1997. He shined on mediocre teams until he asked for a trade after the 2009 season. He ended up in Atlanta in exchange for a 2010 draft pick.

He holds the NFL career record for TD's by a tight and with 103 as well as total receiving yards by a TE with 14,268. When his team defeated the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday and moved onto the NFC Championship game, it marked the first playoff win for Gonzalez in his career.

Pats fans are getting ready for their 7th AFC title game in 12 years. Gonzalez just got his first playoff win in 16 seasons. Fans often take things for granted, but players don't. Miami Dolphins QB went to the Super Bowl in his second season, but never went back again during his 17 year career.

Like Marino, Gonzalez holds a slew of NFL records and has 13 selections to the Pro Bowl. However, he played on lousy teams and never got the chance to shine on the big stage. Sunday could be the last game of his career.

I hope he gets a chance to play in the Super Bowl.

No Surprise Here

The Pats will go forward for the rest of their schedule without TE Rob Gronkowski. He has seen limited action since breaking his forearm. He did it again last night on the first ball thrown to him. The Ravens will no longer need to plan against him.

The fact that he broke his arm again didn't surprise me. I thought it was very risky for him to play with that big cast on his arm. The decision to get players onto the field often gets blurry when it comes to injuries.

Players land in awkward positions all the time. Many of them try to brace themselves by using their arms before they hit the ground. I'm surprised there are not more broken arms. In Gronk's tenure with the team, I have seen him use his arms when he hits the ground. It was almost inevitable that his arm would break at some point.

Hopefully Not The Last Game of the Season

It's 90 minutes before the kickoff against the Houston Texans. The season has come down to these final hours. By 8pm we should know whether the Pats play for another week or pack it up and wait until next season.

One play could make the difference for either team. One play could define a career for better or worse. As a fan, you always want to have your team playing today. That's all you can ever hope for. A victory would be nice to get to the AFC Championship game. There are no guarantees.

The season will end for one of these teams.

It Could Be Ray's Last Day

CBS just showed Ravens LB Ray Lewis doing his pregame ritual with the defense. This might be the last time we ever see it unless the Ravens beat the Denver Broncos. Lewis is retiring after a 17 year career.

It's a treat to see two Hall of Fame players in Lewis and Payton Manning vying for a chance to go to the Super Bowl one more time. I would rather have the Ravens win today and the Pats would face them in Foxborough next week in the AFC Championship game. The Pats need to beat Houston for this to be relevant.

Manning has made a miraculous return after sitting out last season with a neck injury. If the Ravens lose, the Pats will need to travel to Denver for the game next Sunday. We will also never have another chance to see Ray Lewis play again. We will only see him on video.

The Door Is Closing

The options for Jets QB Tim Tebow are getting fewer. Gang Green plans to release his soon according to reports. In Jacksonville, new GM Dave Caldwell has already washed his hands of the native son. Last season, the Jaguars and Jets were the only teams that expressed interest in a trade. He might have more options as a free agent.

Could he end up in New England with his former Coach Josh MacDaniels who drafted him? Tebow insists that he wants to compete as a QB. If that's the case, his best option might be to head north to the CFL like Doug Flutie did for several years. Most teams view him as a tight end or fullback.

I admire Tebow's determination to play his favorite position, but the writing is on the wall. He will never get a chance to compete unless a team wants him. I would have no problem if the Pats brought him into training camp next summer. However, it would be as a tight end and the roster is already full of them.

Does Holmes Have A Home Here?

The bottom portion of a team's NFL roster is composed of players fighting to stay in the league. The practice squad members are often used as fodder on the "scout team". For some, this will be as far as they get in their NFL career. They might get activated and play in a couple of games, but eventually, they get released.

The signing of WR Andre Holmes to the practice squad might be to imitate Houston's WR Andre Johnson. Both players are almost the same height (6'4") and weight. Holmes will be used on the scout team, but what is his future after Sunday?

Will they keep him around for the next game preparation or discard him because they no longer need him on the scout team? Such is life on the practice squad.

Taking A Knee

Robert Griffin III might be a very dynamic player and have a brilliant future in the NFL, but his injury in Sunday's season ending loss shows the vulnerability of a running quarterback.

His MRI revealed a partially torn LCL. There could be some damage to his ACL, but that won't be known until he has surgery.

He now joins the list of running quarterbacks such as Michael Vick who performed so well throwing and running with the ball, but in the end, got injured. Griffin already dealt with a torn ACL back in 2009. Another knee injury isn't good for the rookie quarterback.

The Redskins will now hold their breath until the final determination is made on the extent of his problem. No matter what happens, it's just another example of what can go wrong with a quarterback who likes to run. It works great in college, but certainly has its problems in the NFL.

A Game Never Played

After Alabama won their second consecutive BCS national championship and the third in four years, the talk began about whether that squad could beat a team from the NFL.

First, the game would never happen because of the concern for injuries. The NFL is very protective of its image so there would be nothing to be gained by playing.

It does create a great deal of hypothetical talk about a match-up. Last year, Alabama had four of the first 33 players selected in the NFL draft. Teams around the league are filled with players from Nick Saban's teams.

I think the NFL would win the battle based on depth, but it would be a very fascinating game.

No Job Security

The head coaching selection process in the NFL gets really crazy. So many candidates are just be recycled between teams. Some of the more favored candidates such as Chip Kelley, Bill O'Brien and Josh McDaniels have chosen to remain with their teams. You can't blame them as some of the opening are destined to be bad teams for the next few years.

It seems like nothing will ever get better in Buffalo or Cleveland. They hire and fire their coaches on a regular basis. The Eagles will probably end up with their 5th choice as their final selection by the time they decide.

It's easy to see why some coaches decide to stay at the same place. There is no job stability in the NFL. I feel bad for the assistant coaches who are impacted whenever a new head coach is selected. They know the process when they sign up to do this for a carer, but it's never easy.

Mike Beng Mike

Leave it to Coach Mike Shanahan of the Redskins to kill their chances of advancing in the playoffs. He made it worse with the way the team handled the knee injury of QB Robert Griffin III.

There was a story in USA Today quoting Dr James Andrews about how the team handled RJIII's first knee injury on Dec 9th. Coach Mike Shanahan insists that Dr Andrews cleared RJIII to return to the game. There is a big dispute over who said what.

In light of what happened to RGIII in the loss today, there will be a great deal of second guessing as to why he was even allowed to be on the field.  He was very ineffective in the offense.

The grotesque twisting of his knee late in the game can only make things worse. Hopefully, he didn't do any long term damage. I have no doubt that we will soon hear that he is going into surgery from an ACL or MCL or a little bit of everything.

I have no doubt that we will be listening to a blame game story over the treatment of RJIII.

A Soft Record

NFL career records don't always tell the real story. Many regard Hall of Famer Jim Brown as the greatest running back of all time. His career average carry of 5.22 yards was the record until two weeks ago when Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles surpassed him with an average of 5.82 yards.

This record might not last that long. Charles will have his average effected if he continues to play. I think his record is soft because he did it on 770 attempts while Brown did his with 2,359. In fact, Charles just met the bare minimum of 750 career carries to qualify for the record.

Let's see where he stands after next season.

Nine Yards Short

Everyone knew it would be a challenge for Vikings RB Adrien Peterson to break the regular season rushing record held by Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson since 1984. His 2,105 yards is the standard that has been surpassed. However, seven  players have gone over 2,000 yards in a season.

Peterson needed 208 yards in a game the Vikings needed to win against Green Bay to make the playoffs. It came down to the final drive of the game. The Vikings got the 29 yard winning field goal. Peterson carried the ball 34 times for 199 yards, coming up nine yards short. He will probably watch this game the rest of his life and wonder where he could have picked up another nine yards, especially during the last possession.

Peterson made a miraculous comeback this season after tearing his ACL in the final game of the 2011 regular season. He came back better than before.

Although he didn't get the record, his team is in the playoffs and gets to face Green Bay again in one of the Wild Card games this Saturday.

Rex Is Missing

Coach Rex Ryan once stated that he wanted to knock the Giants off the back page page of the New York tabloids. He certainly did that, but for all the wrong reasons.

First, they let go of GM Mike Tannenbaum after 17 years with the team, seven of them as GM. He paid a heavy price for the horrible contract he gave to Mark Sanchez. Ironically, Tannenbaum was hired by Bill Parcells in 1997 because of his expertise with the salary cap. However, the contract of Sanchez has put the Jets into a precarious situation with the salary cap for the next two seasons.

Rex had a press conference scheduled, but it was cancelled by the team. He has jetted off to the Bahamas. The Jets have violated league policy by not having Ryan give his end of the season press conference within a week of the team's last game. What' going on? Are more heads ready to roll? How can Offensive Coordinator Tony Sporano survive the purge?

The absence of Rex is giving the tabloids a field day.The circus is not only in town, but it's here for an extended engagement.

The End For Ray

It came as a shock, but it almost was inevitable that Ravens LB Ray Lewis announced that he will retire at the end of the season. After 17 campaigns, the iconic Lewis is hanging it up at the age of 37. He suffered a torn tricep in Week 6. He finally was activated to the roster two weeks ago.

He always appeared indestructible on the filed. His hits were legendary. He took a great deal of punishment, but handed it out with reckless abandon.

He was the face of the Baltimore Ravens, as well as their heart and soul. His accomplishments are very lengthy. In five years, he will roll into the Hall of Fame.

The NFL has suffered a loss with the pending departure of Lewis, but as Coach Belichick often says: "Nobody plays this game forever."

The Annual Shuffling

There is so much pressure to win in the NFL. That's what it's all about for the fans. They don't give out awards for "Hardest Working Senior". The Pats have shown a a great degree of stability under the ownership by the Kraft family. Three coaches in twenty years is quite an achievement. In earlier years, the Pats were changing coaches as often as people switch jobs.

The rest of the league has varying degrees of stability. Andy Reid was fired from the Eagles after 14 seasons. Lovie Smith was fired by the Bears after finishing 10-6, but out of the playoffs.

Black Monday showed the state of flux in the NFL. The seven coaches fired on Monday were more than had been dismissed in the last three years combined. Five GM's also met the same fate. That is a huge swing from the four that were fired from 2007-2011.

Will things change for these teams? In some cases, it will be a positive step. Some will make the playoffs next year, but others will continue their ways. Buffalo let Chan Galley go after missing the playoffs again since 1999.

Teams will start with a clean slate, bit others will have their same institutional problems. The Cowboys will continue to flounder as long as owner Jerry Jones is their GM. Earlier this season, he said the GM should have been fired. However, he couldn't fire himself. He was having too much fun as spokesman for the team and seeing himself on television.

Next year at this time, we will go through this all over again. The teams will get shuffled and some of the fired coaches will just end up on another team.
