Weighing In Big Time

It's easy to see a direct relationship between the size of NFL players and the increase with major injures. Years ago, players rarely ruptured muscles or tendons, but it happens more frequently now. The sheer size of players is a major factor.

Back in 1980, there were only three players who weighed over 300 pounds. Last season, there were 353  over 300 pounds, including three who tipped the scales over 350. The biggest size is on the offensive line with 31 of 32 teams having an average weight over 300.

Players know they need the weight and bulk to compete against their peers. Not much thought is given to their post-career days. Down the road, there will be numerous heart attacks and strokes caused by excessive size and weight gain.

The NFL gives it some attention, but knows that speed and size help drive the product and keep the money machine flowing.
