Coach Belichick is always looking for players who can help the team. In spite of being overloaded with receivers, they are bring former Giant/Jet WR Plaxico Burress in for a tryout. It's hard to figure the logic behind this, although everyone seems to think Deion Branch is on the "bubble".
The team seems to be going with Brandon Lloyd, Jabbar Gaffney, Wes Welker and Donte Stallworth for four of the roster spots. Matthew Slater and Julian Edelman will make the team for what they do on special teams. It would be a stretch to carry one more receiver.
They could sign Burress for the veteran minimum, but would they keep him on the roster for the first game of the season? By doing that, they would guarantee his contract. It sounds like they might be "kicking the tires" on him.
