As usual, Coach Belichick was vague in his answers about why the team released DE Johnathan Fanene after signing him to a three year contract, including a $3.85 million bonus. Fanene has spent most of camp on the sidelines with a variety of injuries.
His signing made a big splash back in March. The seven year veteran was seen as playing a major role on the defensive line this season. As Coach Belichick said "things didn't work out". Apparently Fanene had an injury that was not disclosed at the time of his signing.
The Pats will be forced to eat his bonus, but can do it over two seasons. Based on his possible prior injury, the team has the option to recover his bonus. We will probably never find out what really happened.
