Bad Decisions By the Bengals

Teams cannot afford to make mistakes when they sign free-agents. It can impact the salary cap negatively, although this is an uncapped year.

The Cincinnati Bengals released WR Antonio Bryant over the weekend. They had signed him to a 4 year, $28 million contract during the off-season, in spite of knowing that his play had been limited during the 2009 season because of a knee injury.

He passed his physical during training camp, but missed practices and the first three pre-season games. If the team had flunked him on his physical, they could have placed him on the Physically Unable To Perform List which would have allowed the Bengals the chance to bring him back after the seventh game of the season.

By releasing him, they have nothing to show for their investment. In fact, $8 million was guaranteed in his signing bonus. The Bengals decided to move on after signing Terrell Owens and the emergence of rookie Jordan Shipley.
