No More Bowling

The collegiate bowl season is finally ending tonight with the BSC title game between Auburn and Oregon. It will be the last of 35 games. They are a financial windfall for the schools and sometimes for the network. ESPN broadcast most of them to relatively decent-sized television audiences. In many cases, the stadiums were lacking fans.

It's difficult to create hype in cities that are not home to the teams. Some of the match-ups involved teams with 7-5 records. This does not lend itself to generating interest.

Perhaps the names need to be changed. Sponsors have bought up the naming rights, but some were so lame including the Kraft Fight Hunger, BBVA Compass, Chick-Fil-A and my favorite Beef 'O' Brady.

It's hard to believe that some player will forever be known as the MVP of the Beef 'O' Brady Bowl.
