Ultimate Job Security

It was inevitable that Wade Phillips would be fired by Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys. His team was picked as one of the pre-season favorites to make it to the Super Bowl. After a 1-7 record, the axe has fallen on Phillips.

Jerry Jones is the same guy who fired Jimmy Johnson after two Super Bowl wins. There is no pleasing this guy. Jones serves as the team's GM and spokesperson. He has his own press conferences. His hand is in every detail of running the team.

As the owner, he has the right to do anything he pleases. He has made a lot of mistakes, causing the team to drift further away from their glory years.

He can continue to make mistakes and not get fired. He refuses to admit that he might be part of the problem. Any coach he hires will need to be a yes-man to him. You can certainly rule out John Gruden and Bill Cowher as future candidates.

I never understood why Jones doesn't name himself as the coach. He does everything, but call the plays.
