Matt Cassel Goes For #14

QB Matt Cassel has made quite a career for himself as a backup. The Lions just signed him as insurance for Matthew Stafford.

The 35 year old was selected by the Pats in the 7th round of the 2005 draft. He had a breakout season in 2008 after Tom Brady suffered a season ending knee during the team's first game. He lead them to a record of 11-5.

They traded him to the Chiefs prior to the 2009 season. He finally made some serious money before moving to the Vikings, Bills, Cowboys, Titans and now the Lions.

He knows what his role is. That has kept him around for 14 seasons.

They Think They Know

Talk show callers are determined to predict how much longer Bill Belichick will be with the Pats. Why do people waste so much time on this issue? It doesn't seem to matter to them.

He will be here for as long as he wants. Why don't people get that?

Things could change in his life real fast. Nobody knows what happens day to day.

Here's Johnny Hurting His Chances

If Johnny Manziel wants to hurt his chances to get back into the NFL, he did a great job with his comments on a radio show.

He basically blamed the Browns for not knowing that wasn't an "X's and O's" type of player. He never studied film while in college.

It looks like he is trying to shift the blame of his failure back to the Browns. That is so wrong on his part.

If he wants an invitation to training camp, he needs to give a team a reason why they want him there. That can only be done through his play.

Cooks One and Done

The Pats now have flexibility in the upcoming draft after they traded WR Brandin Cooks and a fourth round pick to the Rams for their #23 overall selection.

They also have the 31st pick in the first round. Will Belichick try to package those two first rounders and move up to select a targeted player?

There are a number of possible scenarios. The team will continue to explore other moves.

Who Is Going To Cleveland?

It seems like quarterbacks are doomed to failure with the Cleveland Browns after having 24 of them on their roster since 1999. Will it be different in 2018 with all of their draft picks?

They have a chance to get it right. None of the top quarterbacks really want to end up with the Browns, but they can't say that publicly.

Whoever goes there also has the chance to lead them to the playoffs. Will that happen?

The 1994 Draft

The NFL Network did a great job with their program about the 1994 draft. They had so many great videos from the players, coaches and team executives.

Teams had to make a lot of decisions back then. They all did their best, but the program showed that mistakes were made in spit of the best efforts by all.

Getting Closer For Gronk

The NFL Network had a good story about whether the Pats might trade Rob Gronkowski. Nobody knows what Gronk has planned for his future. Will he retire of keep playing?

If the Pats had a great offer on draft day, would they make the move? This will eventually come to a head.

Johnny Was Here

Teams are paying attention to whenever Johnny Manziel shows up to throw passes to receivers at College Pro Days.

Apparently, the Pats had him in for a pre-draft interview in 2014 along with Jimmy Garoppolo and Teddy Bridgewater.

It only worked out for Jimmy. Teddy got hurt, but still signed with the Jets for this year. Johnny is on the outside, trying to get back in.

Head Rules

The NFL is trying to improve player safety without drastically altering the game. Their new rule about leading or launching with the helmet will have a profound effect on next season.

There needs to be a lot of player education about this new rule. It will probably present a lot of issues during the pre-season games.

Something needs to be done about head injuries.

Showdown With Dez

Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones said that he will meet with WR Dez Bryant by next week to talk about his contract. It probably won't end well for Bryant.

He is due to make $12.5 million this season, while counting $16.5 million against the salary cap. His decreased production over the last three seasons got him to this point.

No team can dedicate this much money for his level of production. The hand writing is on the wall, but Dez doesn't want to admit it.

Belichick and Kraft Speak

Fans heard from Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft today, but it wasn't enough to satisfy some people on talk radio.

They are never going to move on from the Super Bowl. There is nothing anyone can ever do about it.

The 2018 season is here. It's time to build a new team from free agents and draft choices.

Beckham Acts Up Again

It's beginning to get old for Giants owner John Marra. Odell Beckham Jr gets in the news for something stupid and Marra says he needs to act more responsible.

This is coming from the guy who signs Odell's paychecks and has the power to make him the highest paid receiver in the NFL.

The Giants have one more season with Beckham at a little over $8 million. They should let him play out the year before negotiating with him.

His behavior reflects poorly on the team and himself.
