Not Getting A Kick Out Of It

The NFL is never shy about free publicity and promoting itself. We saw that with the Regional Scouting Combine in New Jersey where the first female kicker made her debut. A large media contingent turned out for this spectacle and it certainly became one.

She took attention away from the other 37 kickers who had been training their entire life for this moment. Under the media glare, she had trouble kicking the ball longer than 20 yards. Her talent bordered on being a joke.

The NFL milked this stunt for all it could. It pandered to the female fans by trying to insinuate that she had a prayer at getting an invite to a training camp. The league needs to look at how they assemble the rosters for these Regional Combines. Currently, anyone can sign up as long as the $275 application fee gets paid.

This seem like a publicity stunt more than anything else. She got her 15 minutes of fame. The NFL had no problem going along with it.
