Another Bankrupt Player

It's hard to believe that Jets QB Mark Brunell could be filing bankruptcy after earning more that $50 million during his 19 year NFL career. Court documents indicate that Brunell owes more than $25 million from legal cases as a result of his failed business ventures.

After he retires at the end of this season, Brunell plans to take a job as a salesman for a medical company. It's easy to see why he signed with the Jets for one more season. He can't make this type of money on the outside. The only thing to raise concern is that he could end up playing if Mark Sanchez gets hurt.

The plight of Brunell is nothing out of the ordinary for former players. A recent study showed that 78% of the players are either facing financial disaster, divorce or unemployment within two years of their retirement.

The league pays its players very well, but does not do enough to prepare them for life after football.
